24 Play Festival Savannah Brings a group of Talented Locals Together on Aug. 4
The Savannah theater community is gearing up for the return of the 24-Hour Play Fest this weekend after a successful run, off and on, over the years. The unique collaborative event challenges writers, directors, and actors to come together and produce a series of 10-minute plays in just 24 hours.
On Aug. 3 and 4 this dynamic theatrical event, presented by Savannah Performance Alliance in collaboration with Savannah Children’s Theatre, will showcase the creativity and talent of local artists.
"We had such a great time doing it, with a wonderful audience back in 2022, the idea was to bring it back in 2023 but we all got busy," said Chris Bass, executive producer and one of the main organizers. “The event offers an opportunity for performance artists in Savannah who don't normally collaborate to come together in a creative, unbranded space.”
On Sunday, the directors and actors are assembled, and the plays are rehearsed throughout the day before being performed for a live audience that evening.
"It's anything from a dramatic reading to a comedy with a pocket watch," said Bass, describing the variety of genres and themes that have emerged from past festivals. "You don't know what you're going to get."
This year's edition of the 24-Hour Play Fest is expected to feature six writers, six directors, and close to 24 actors coming together to create a lively and unpredictable evening of theater.
Rick Garman of Savannah Cabaret and Jayme Tinti of Savannah Stage Company are the latest additions to the 24 Hour Plays lineup. Garman, who has written or produced more than two dozen movies for the Hallmark Channel and other networks, will flex his writing muscles by penning a brand new 10-minute play, while Tinti will take the director's helm for one of the original productions. They join a talented ensemble of more than 40 artists who will collaborate to bring six new plays to life in just 24 hours.
The organizers are excited to once again provide a platform for Savannah's creative community to push the boundaries of what's possible in just 24 hours.
