THE CONNECT FIVE: Shows to see this week

NORDISTA FREEZE’S SPACE PROM @ VICTORY NORTH
THU JAN  18 | 8 PM

Covered in detail for the December print edition of Connect Savannah, Nordista Freeze is landing Space Prom on Savannah this week. The unstoppable indie rocker hails from Nashville, but he’s made Savannah a second home with a steady stream of wild shows over the last few years at El Rocko, Savannah Stopover, District Live, The Jinx (RIP, for now) and the venue for Space Prom, Victory North. Freeze is bringing his large eight-piece band and inviting a bunch of musicians and singers to join the primarily late ‘70s/early ‘80s cover song setlist. Guests on stage include Veronica Garcia-Melendez of Bero Bero, Greta Schroeder of Basically Nancy, Lakin Crawford and too many others to list. Over its history, Space Prom has grown bigger and bigger each year in Nashville and sells out every time. There is no bullying at this prom, but you’ve been warned.

S’VILLES + ROSIE + BRANDON NELSON MCCOY  @ EL ROCKO
FRI JAN 19 | 8 PM

For gritty and raw old-school country, Savannah has plenty of options. One of the grittiest and rawest is S’villes, who call their stripped-down sound “humiditycore.” The trio might remind you of minimalist bands that ride the punk-country line, like Dead Moon or the bigger, brighter Southern Culture on the Skids, who also feel “right at home playing the bars as they are playing DIYs and punk shows.” Local openers are folk storyteller Brandon Nelson McCoy, who drops a healthy dose of blues into his acoustic country sounds, and solo acoustic country artist Rosie, who strips it down so raw she recorded her last album in a trailer bathroom!

DAMON AND THE SHITKICKERS @ OVER YONDER
SAT JAN  20 | 3 PM

The winner of Connect Savannah’s Best Country Band for 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022 barely needs an introduction. Say what you will about reader’s polls, but you just don’t win that much unless you're Olive Garden, have lots of employees told to “vote, or else,” and are under the impression you’re serving food (let alone Italian food). There are no such delusions about Damon and the Shitkickers. They are experts at many styles of country music, and yes, TC5 is pushing the matinee shows because you should be able to enjoy a killer live band when it isn’t dark out yet. And now you can, at Over Yonder, with a drool-worthy double stack cheeseburger or a shockingly satisfying tofu something or other and so much Lone Star beer you’ll think you’re at a bar on Congress Street in Austin wondering how that Treyla Trash sticker got on the wall.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS @ VICTORY NORTH
SAT JAN 20 | 8 PM

NMA was a trio for their first 20 years, but the Southern rock and blues veterans are now down to the Dickinson brothers, Luther and Cody. They got off to a promising start when their first record earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Two other records were nominated over the following five years, cementing their place in the national blues rock scene. They’ve since collaborated with Lucinda Williams, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Otha Turner, always looking to expand upon the foundational sound they are known for. Their longevity is undeniable, too. After the initial nominations and recognition in the early aughts, their 2017 album “Prayer for Peace” made it to No. 1 on the Billboard Blues chart.

IAN ABER @ THE WORMHOLE
SAT JAN 20 | 8 PM

The Atlanta-based comic keeps busy. He writes, performs, and produces shows, was a National Finalist in NBC's Stand Up For Diversity, and hosts the “Str8 Ppl: A Minor Look at the Majority” podcast. He’s also appeared at more comedy festivals than you can count. In his act, Aber riffs on inescapable conversations with strangers that can go wrong so fast, food acting like drugs, and fighting off attackers with deadly fashion criticism. His Twitter/X page, @ABearComedian, is an excellent representative of his act. Short quips, dark observations and naughty stuff dominate, so if it cracks you up, you’ll barely survive the live show.
