THE CONNECT FIVE: Shows to see this week in Savannah

The full gamut: metal, country, EDM, pop and classic rock. Sorry, ladies, no powerviolence.

CORRUPTED EMPIRE + RECTOPLASM + THE TARNISHED + OSHINER @ THE SENTIENT BEAN
SATURDAY, JULY 13 | 7 PM
NOTICE: This show has earned the Official TC5 Clean Underwear Warning.
Because the Southern summer heat isn’t pummeling you enough, AURA brings four teams of heavyweight headstompers to get loud AF at the otherwise pleasant and peaceful Sentient Bean. Headliners Corrupted Empire (pictured) released three brütal singles last year, cementing their position as one of Savannah’s heaviest metal bands. They’ll finish off what’s left of you after the triple beating from the rest of the lineup. Oshiner opens the show with blistering, cacophonous metalcore accented by stoner grooves and piercing notes bent into the Shadow Realm. Their single “Dementia” couldn’t be timelier. Atlanta’s hardcore quintet The Tarnished adds some punk attitude and breakdowns to their relentless aggression. Their debut EP, “Self Decay,” crushes faces and obliterates eardrums. Third but not least, a band with a name so great their music could be crap. It isn’t, but it might make you do so in your pants. The Colombia, SC–Savannah band throws death metal like Mike Tyson threw right uppercuts: hard, fast and disorienting. One only wonders what will become of The Bean’s poor, helpless oat milk.

SID JER-DAN & THE CARAVAN @ THE WORMHOLE
FRIDAY, JULY 12 | 9:30 PM
Sid knocked around Atlanta for 10 years into his late 20s, struggling to get by and sometimes living in his car. A few years later, he went to his first meeting and got sober. At 35, he’s worked to reinvent himself. The pandemic gave him time to move away from loud guitars and rock 'n' roll and put in the time to discover 50 years of country music. It vibed with him, and the creativity building up was about to burst. When he put that study to music, the response was a reward for his perseverance. A procession of bookings followed, an NPR "City Lights" interview grew his reputation, and touring outside Atlanta helped add to the fan base. He also plays with Andrea and Mud, who killed it at Over Yonder a few months back, blending country with surf rock. Sid’s music is as old-school country as it gets, authentic and respectful. But if you can’t make it to the Wormhole show Friday night, he’s also playing an Over Yonder matinee on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. Seeing both would be best.

DOWNLINK + DIESEL BOY @ ELAN SAVANNAH
SATURDAY, JULY 13 | 10 PM
The lowest bass found in the sub-basement of the Mariana Trench has nothing on what these two legends of EDM have unleashed on the world. A two-headliner show in the genre isn’t too common, so in addition to the world-class dubstep, drum and bass, and dark n’ heavy beats, it’s a bang for your buck winner, too. Downlink has been at it for a decade, formulating dirty bass with precise technical skills since blowing up in 2013. Dieselboy may have been born with musical talent. His dad had a monster yacht rock hit in 1982 with “Key Largo.” The kid went in a decidedly different musical direction, selling his first mixtape in 1994 on LISTSERV, an early internet mailing list service. Five years later, he was being flown into festivals to perform. In between, he started the first EDM nights at clubs in Philadelphia. Thirty years later, he’s an EDM OG with decades of success and the respect that goes with it. The combo is a three-hour back-to-back extravaganza. The promoters say, “expect nothing less than pure audio devastation,” which seems reasonably accurate. Only one way to find out.

LOVE STORY – TAYLOR SWIFT TRIBUTE @ COACH’S CORNER
SATURDAY, JULY 13 | 7 PM
Is it surprising there is already a Taylor Swift tribute act? It's hard to say, but most people would probably not guess she’s been releasing records for 18 years now. Her 2006 debut was a smash, and the 10 follow-ups and four re-recorded records all hit No. 1. The total is a staggering 200 million sales. Only fellow mid-30s chanteuse Adele can compete, with 120 million sales, but for only four albums. Swift has become a cultural icon, of course, with an army of fans who are just as ready to swarm and annihilate perceived enemies on social media as the Beyonce faithful. In the tribute show, singer Rikki Lee Wilson does a formidable recreation of Tay-Tay backed by a full live band. The real thing costs an arm and a leg, is performed in stadiums and other sports venues live music has no business being played in, and if IG video clips are indicative you can barely hear anything above the constant screaming. It’s like The Beatles at Shea every night. At Coach’s, you get cold beer, table service, good food and a ticket price that does not need 0% financing and easy terms. Life is full of trade-offs. These can be much worse.

INTERSTELLAR ECHOES – PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE @ TYBEE POST THEATER
FRIDAY & SATURDAY, JULY 5 & 6 | 8 PM
The forecast for this Saturday at Tybee Island is mostly sunny in the high 80s, a welcome break after a stormy week of typical summer afternoon boomers. In other words, a perfect beach day. You know the drill. Make it a full day at Tybee with some quality beach time, an early gourmet hot dog and champagne dinner at Sea Wolf, finished off with a stadium-level laser light and sound show from Interstellar Echoes, an Atlanta-based Pink Floyd tribute band that does not mess around. Taking the stage at the intimate Tybee Post Theater as they do most summers, they play the hits you love and deeper album cuts from the early Syd Barret days that are rarely played live by anyone. Given that Pink Floyd has sold more than 250 million records since 1965, there are more than a couple of tribute bands. The Peach State is lucky to have one of the best. Savannah is lucky to get two shows.
