THE CONNECT FIVE: Shows to see this week in Savannah

Assuming it eventually stops raining, a loaded weekend awaits.

KIMBERLY MORGAN YORK @ OVER YONDER
SATURDAY, AUG. 10 | 3 PM
For the uninitiated, TC5 is a huge proponent of Over Yonder matinees. The skinny: ice-cold Lone Stars, the best burger in town, three hours in the middle of the day when you’d be otherwise in another air-conditioned space without live music, live music, and an authentic S. Congress Street, Austin, Texas vibe that’s hard to find anywhere, let alone the Savannah metropolitan area. For this weekend’s entertainment, Kentucky-born, Athens-based singer/songwriter Kimberly Morgan York rounds out the atmosphere. She began singing at three, was married to a Drive-By Trucker, and imbues her traditional country with a bit of extra funk from her Appalachian roots. Most would hear Dolly in her voice, and few should have issue with that. Her latest, October 2023’s “Devil Songs and Other Such Nonsense” EP, offers a wink and a nod to the theme. Still, the songs are seriously soulful and polished, with a diabolically sly anti-creep anthem for good measure. A matinee match made in heaven.

Yesterday's Clothes

YESTERDAY’S CLOTHES @ EL ROCKO
FRIDAY, AUG. 9 | 8 PM
The Asheville-based alternative rock quartet hits the sweet spot of the current alt-pop vibe like so many excellent Nashville bands that have treated Savannah over the last few years. That alone is reason enough to check them out. The unexpected element they offer is an ease in shifting from dreamy, gauzy passages with echo-laden vocals that build to power-chord-juiced hard rock bombing runs. Sometimes, in the same song. There are also nods to old-school jangly REM- and UK-style alt-rock from the first wave, suggesting a level of historical interest. Yesterday’s Clothes is a relatively new band, and the El Rocko show is the second stop on their first tour. Get a good spot under an El Rocko air conditioning vent and embrace the cool and new.

Chanel West Coast

CHANEL WEST COAST @ ELAN SAVANNAH
SATURDAY, AUG. 10 | 10 PM
Whether television was intentionally her way to fame before launching a music career or not, Chelsea West Coast is on tour. The former MTV reality show cast member and star of Ridiculousness grew up bouncing between West Hollywood weirdness with her mom and in NYC with her DJ dad, hanging out when he performed. This planted the music bug, and a few years into MTV fame, Lil Wayne took an interest in her recordings. He signed her to his label in 2012. Her debut LP was delayed, but nearly two dozen singles were released over the next few years before “America’s Sweetheart” finally dropped in 2020. She had a baby two years ago and is now back to work with a tour that complements the new MTV reality show The West Coast Hustle. Some of you might reasonably ask yourself, “Is MTV still around?” Apparently, it is, and she may be the reason why.

Slippery When Wet

SLIPPERY WHEN WET - BON JOVI TRIBUTE @ COACH’S CORNER
SATURDAY, AUG. 10 | 7 PM
Hard to believe for some of us that these guys started 40 years ago. In the mid-1980s, Bon Jovi’s third album, Slippery When Wet, caught fire with the MTV-fueled hair metal craze. The highest priority in that scene was looks, and they had it. But the songs were a cut above the typical Aqua Net-and-neon-drenched posers in Motley Crüe (who tragically traded Satan for women’s hair, makeup and athletic wear) and Ratt (who only ever had one good song, and Pearcy is still milking it). Bon Jovi’s hard rock included hit songs ready for videos and radio, sending the record soaring to a ridiculous 20 million sales. The follow-up, New Jersey, followed the formula and sold 10 million. That decade of glory eventually ended when grunge murdered glam, but Bon Jovi shifted their sound proportionately to their age. By blending in just a little country, they added new fans and were huge again by the mid-2000s. Jon aging well didn’t hurt, either. It’s a different vibe than they started with, as it should be, growing with the tastes of the massive audience that helped them sell 120 million records. Slippery When Wet has been at it for 20 years, and with almost 2000 shows under their belt, they are unrivaled experts at emulating the real thing's sound, look and feel.

Wrath Nasty
WRATH NASTY @ THE WORMHOLE
SATURDAY, AUG. 10 | 8 PM
When he’s not running the Totally Awesome Bar’s impressive karaoke operation, Wrath Nasty (no relation to Nobbs, Sags or Janet) is often seen terrorizing stand-up comedy stages in Savannah. He’s opened for veteran Doug Stanhope and legend Bobcat Goldthwaite. That’s all well and good, but most interestingly, he shared a jail cell with cheese metal pioneer and Las Vegas bad boy Kip Winger of the eponymous band ultimately destroyed by the mockery of cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead. If that isn’t some kind of transmutational communication from the universe that the nexus of comedy and music is strong in Wrath Nasty (no relation to Ronny from Nasty Savage), what is?
