Dr. Jacquelyn W. Stephens to receive Regents’ Hall of Fame Alumni and Distinguished Friends Award

The University System of Georgia Foundation Board of Trustees recently
announced Dr. Jacquelyn W. Stephens has been named a 2024 recipient of the Regents' Hall of Fame Alumni and Distinguished Friends Award. This honor recognizes Dr. Stephens' exceptional contributions to education and her impactful legacy at Savannah State University (SSU) and within the community.

A 1960 alumna of SSU, Stephens earned a master’s degree in education from Illinois State University and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Oklahoma. Her remarkable academic journey in the field of education culminated in her retirement as professor emerita from Armstrong Atlantic State University, now Georgia Southern University.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Regents Hall of Fame Alumni and Distinguished Friends Award,” said Dr. Stephens. “Thanks to the University System of Georgia Foundation Board of Trustees. Also, thanks to my beloved Savannah State University for nominating me.”


Throughout her illustrious career, Stephens has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Regional Education Service Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Armstrong Atlantic State University Alumni Association Award, the Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society’s Point of Excellence Award, and SSU’s Cyrus G. Wiley Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Stephens was also recognized as a 1985 National Kellogg Fellow.

Dr. Stephens has also made significant contributions to the field of  bibliotherapy and reading education. She has authored a book and several articles on these subjects and has delivered numerous scholarly presentations at national and international conferences. Her work has greatly influenced the understanding and practice of reading education, benefiting students and educators alike.

The award honors individuals or couples of remarkable character, accomplishment, and dedication to higher education. Stephens will officially be recognized at the annual Regents’ Scholarship and Awards Gala to be held on Sept. 12, 2024 in Fayetteville, Georgia.
